How to create a URL slug from a title and check the result

Convert a heading to a lowercase ASCII slug, review changed letters, and check for empty or duplicate results before using it.

Identify the part of the URL you need

A slug is usually a readable path segment, such as summer-photo-guide, rather than a complete address with domain, query parameters and a fragment. Open the URL Slug Generator when you need to turn a heading into that kind of identifier. Enter the heading, not an entire link that you want to preserve. This tool produces lowercase ASCII letters, digits and hyphens. That is its output policy; it does not mean every website must remove non-Latin characters from its URLs.

Apply a sample with accented letters

Paste İstanbul & Straße café into Input and select Apply. The result is istanbul-strasse-cafe. The Turkish dotted capital İ becomes i, German ß becomes ss, and the accent in café is removed. Spaces and the ampersand become a separator rather than remaining as literal characters. Copy the result and inspect the complete spelling before putting it in a route field. Editing the input clears the previous output, so apply again after changing the heading.

Understand what is transformed or lost

The tool lowercases text, handles dotless ı and ß, applies compatibility normalisation, removes combining accents and replaces remaining non-ASCII-letter/digit groups with hyphens. Leading and trailing hyphens are removed. It does not translate words or provide general romanisation of other scripts. For example, Москва produces an empty result rather than moskva. Review multilingual headings carefully and supply a suitable descriptive wording yourself when the original cannot be represented by this converter’s alphabet. There is no custom separator or target-length control.

Check collisions and the receiving system

Different headings can collapse to the same slug: café and cafe both become cafe. The generator does not query your website to find existing routes or reserve a unique address. Check availability in the receiving CMS and follow its length and character rules. A slug is also not the same as percent-encoding text for a URL component. The current tool has no stop-word switch, batch mode or automatic uniqueness suffix. Copying its result does not create a page, update a sitemap or publish a route.

Choose readable paths before changing live URLs

Google recommends hyphens between words in URLs; a generated slug alone does not guarantee a search ranking. Keep the wording relevant to the page rather than adding unrelated keywords. If you are changing an existing published address, plan the site’s redirect and link updates in the system that owns that route. This utility does not make those changes. Keep the original title with the chosen slug so the naming decision is clear later. Generation stays in the browser without uploading the heading.
