How to merge PDF files in the right order

Prepare source files, choose their order and verify the combined document before sending.

Prepare your documents

Make a list of the documents in the intended reading order before combining them. For an application, that might be the cover letter, application form and supporting pages. Open each source PDF first. Password protection, interactive forms or digital signatures may prevent a tool from handling a file safely. Do not assume a merged document preserves a signature’s validity.

Combine and download

Open the PDF merger and select the source files. Review the file order shown in the interface before starting. Follow the displayed file and page limits; splitting a large job may be necessary. Download the combined PDF and keep the source documents until you have checked the result. Merging combines pages; it is not an OCR or text-editing operation.

Check pages rather than just the filename

Open the export in a PDF reader. Check the first and last page of each source document, the total page count and page orientation. If a page is out of place, use PDF reorder; if you only need selected pages, use extraction. Check the destination’s file-size restriction separately. Combining PDFs does not guarantee a smaller file.
