How to convert pixels to centimetres for printing

Use pixel count and DPI together to estimate physical print dimensions.

Open the tool

Use the correct formula

The physical size in centimetres equals pixels divided by DPI, multiplied by 2.54. At 300 DPI, 1800 pixels correspond to 15.24 cm and 2400 pixels correspond to 20.32 cm. The same pixel file at 150 DPI prints twice as wide and high, with fewer pixels per centimetre. DPI is a relationship between pixels and a physical size.

Calculate the target pixels

For a 15 × 20 cm print at 300 DPI, calculate 15 ÷ 2.54 × 300 and 20 ÷ 2.54 × 300: approximately 1772 × 2362 pixels. Enter the actual requested DPI in the converter. Ask the print provider about bleed, trim and its preferred delivery format; these are separate requirements. Do not add white borders unless the print specification calls for them.

Inspect aspect ratio and detail

A 15 × 20 print has a 3:4 ratio. A 2:3 photo cannot fill it without a crop or extra space. Choose a deliberate crop and check that faces or important edges remain inside the safe area. Upsampling can increase pixel dimensions but cannot recreate detail the original never captured. Preview a test print when the final size or viewing distance makes quality critical.
